Simple Elegance from Cannes: Naomi Watts and Diane Lane

Pictured: Naomi Watts on the Red Carpet in Cannes wearing Chopard jewelry. (photo courtesy of Chopard.)

Two of my favorite actresses looked simply elegant tonight in Cannes at the premiere of the Woody Allen film "You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger", at the Palais.  I'm loving the gowns chosen by Naomi Watts and Diane Lane. Naomi is one of the stars of Allen's film. Naomi wore a strapless pale pink chiffon gown embellished with silver sequins by Gucci Première collection.  She accented the gown with a sparkling platinum bracelet set with heart shaped diamonds (62cts) and diamonds by Chopard.  Her ruby earrings were also by Chopard, but some diamonds might have been a bit more subtle :)   I love her look, her hair, and the whole efffect.  I think a cuff is a great way to add an accent.  My current favorite budget cuffs are Kenneth Jay Lane via the shopping clubs, or even his QVC collection.  There are also some great bracelets on clearance now in the Jacqueline Kennedy QVC collection.  After all, Chopard is amazing, but not always affordable.

Pictured: Diane Lane on the Red Carpet in Cannes wearing Chopard jewelry. (photo courtesy of Chopard.)

My other favorite tonight is Diane Lane in this Monique Lhuillier one-shoulder navy floor length gown with the asymmetrical one shoulder strap. A simple diamond brooch accents her waist and the draping of the dress. It's stunning.  Midnight blue or navy is a great evening look complimented with a little bling.  Check out some lower priced one shoulder midnight blue dresses at eDressme.com or BCBG.  As for the brooch, there are some great pieces on sales at Macy's right now and TJ Maxx. I also love looking for Vintage pieces on eBay.  It's the look we seek to emulate, not the price. :)

General Mill's Eat Better America Initiative + Giveaway of a $25.00 Gift Card for Groceries

Although I usually blog on fashion savings, I wanted to take a moment to tell you all about General Mills Eat Right America Campaign.  This is a campaign to raise awareness about our diets, and what is in the foods we eat.  Have any of you been watching Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution on ABC the last few weeks? I have been watching (yes, I signed the petition) and frankly, I find it mesmerizing.  I can't turn away, because it really spotlights the problem of the lack of healthy eating and smart choices about food that  we make in our everyday lives.  Since watching, I've been making more of an effort to eat fresh fruits and veggies, and to cook at home a few nights a week. I've just spent the last week  in the company of my 9 year old niece, and it has  been a struggle to get her to eat healthy foods. She would eat dinner every night from the nearest drive-thru window if left to her own devices. She thinks french fries are a good vegetable choice. One of the healthy things on her diet menu that she eats without being forced is Cheerios! Cheerios are made by General Mills and that is why I wanted to promote their Eat Right America Campaign on the blog.  (Note: This is not a sponsored post. )  If you're looking for free advice on eating right, recipes and some coupons for savings, take a look at the General Mills Eat Right America Campaign.

As a special incentive to bring attention to this campaign, General Mills has offered one of my lucky readers a $25.00 gift card for groceries.  Here's what you need to do to win, simply leave a comment here by Saturday, May 22nd at midnight PST, and let us all know if you have a tip for eating or living healthy. Share a favorite recipe perhaps, or a workout routine that works?   Leave your email address in the comment, like this: healthy hananh at yahoo dot com so I can contact you if you win.

With Summer on the way, and more revealing fashions and swimsuits on display, now is good time to be thinking about this stuff.  To get more information about healthy choices register to become "healthified" on Eat Better America for a chance to win a $1500 grocery sweepstakes.  You can also follow Eat Better America on Twitter.

Note: This giveaway is open only to US residents only since the gift card will only work at a US grocery market.

The Grandparents, Vintage Photo

The one enclosed is from my grand-parents. "Biarritz_1936" They lived normally in Reims, north-east from France.
This photo was taken just before the war in 1936 in Biarritz. They are on their honeymoon. I like this photo a lot because they just feel happy and they look incredibly elegant and stylish even if they are at the sea... it would never happen nowdays ! My grand-father was half english and until his death very elegant, a
real gentlman. I also like the contrast of the perfect hair for my grand-father and the wind blowing through the hair of my grand-mother.

I could not resist sending you a photo of them both in Bandol on the same vacation because I find them so beautiful even though they are just wearing the minimum: a swimsuit. The photo reminds me a little bit of Man Ray photo.
Best regards,

Alexandra

In this installment of store window photos, I want to focus on interesting details. Yes She Can Cannes Cannes: Helen Mirren in Chopard + Elie Saab at the Trophee Chopard

Pictured: Helen Mirren at the TROPHÉE CHOPARD Party in Cannes, France. (photo courtesy of Chopard)

I love Helen Mirren! Her style is flawless and fabulous at any age.  Chopard just sent over this picture from Cannes of Helen in her stunning Chopard jewels and Ellie Saab dress. The dress is silk georgette gown with an embellished belt and asymmetrical sleeves is from Elie Saab’s Vintage Couture Collection.  Her jewelery is a Chopard High Jewelery kunzite and diamond necklace set with a pear-shaped Kunzite weighing 173cts to the micro pavé-set black and white diamond neckline ending with a pear-shaped black diamond as well as a beautiful sapphire ring.  It's funny to look at the Cannes fashion coverage and remember  how I went to Cannes in 2003 wearing a Macy's INC. blouse and an Ann Taylor long skirt with a lovely necklace I purchased on Portebello Road in London for 25 GBP!  And yes, I did walk the Red Carpet up to the Palais. Chopard never even called.  I don't get it.

This year, I'm watching all the coverage from Cannes and I am dazzled by the gems and diamonds.  That's  the idea. This is why the jewelry  is loaned to the stars so they can wear it, and we can all lust after it.  I've been reading  a fascinating book called Glamour by Caroline Dyhouse, where she documents how Harry Winston started the practice of loaning Diamonds to movie stars in the 1930s to bolster faltering sales in the Depression.  And it worked! Women wanted that illusion of Glamour.  I want it. I saw the picture of Helen Mirren and started wondering....mmmm where could I get some nice jewelry without paying exorbitant rates.  Then, the answer came to me. Snap! American Express Membership rewards.  Check out this Swarovski pendant with a stone in a lavender color similar to Helen's dress and Chopard dazzler. (Note: Swarovski also has a strong presence in Cannes, and has been sighted on the Red Carpet. They have even designed a special "MyBag" Crystal Clutch for actresses to carry.)

Pictured: A Swarovski Jewelry Necklace available via American Express Membership Rewards Points.

I didn't realize until I went searching, all the great brands the Membership Rewards program has for jewelry.
The points can be used for jewelry from: Antwerp, Bergdorf Goodman, Brighton, Bulova ,Burberry, Carelle
Damiani, ELLE Jewelry, H.Stern, Hearts on Fire,Judith Jack,Kwiat, LAGOS, Lalique, Majorica, Montblanc,
Neiman Marcus,Roberto Coin, Scott Kay,Skagen, Swarovski, The Jewelers Collection and Tumi.
I know I need to get back to looking for items for my home decorating project, but I have to cruise the fashion stuff too!  It's all Helen Mirren's fault, I can't help it!

Garance's Birthday at Wolgan Valley Resort and Spa

Recently, when we were in Australia we spent Garance's birthday at a really great resort. The rooms, the spa, and the food were all wonderful, but all that interested me was mountain biking around the resort's grounds.

When we told our Australian friends we were gong to the "outback" for the weekend, they laughed when we told them that it was Wolgan Valley and said that the REAL outback was another hour away. After a few more incidents like this we stopped calling it the "outback" and started calling it the "halfback."

(click on image to enlarge photo)
This is Chris, Garance's assistant. Everywhere we turned was another photo-op. With the landscapes, animals, and food, this place truly made me fall in love wth the idea of photography outside of the big city.

I took this picture while riding my bike very fast, too fast in retrospect, on a bumpy dirt rode. I'm surprised that I got even one shot in focus.

Self-portrait of my shadow at sunset. The great/scary thing about these little grass-covered paths is that your bicycle moves so quietly that you can sneak up on a group of kangaroos before they even notice you. I wasn't particularly interested in surprising any kangaroos, so we spent a lot of time singing very loudly while we rode. Human League anyone?

I know that I'm a total city kid and I'm sure that some of you have wrestled bears and hunted dinosaurs, but for me, being this close to wild animals while on a mountain bike was pretty cool.

My primary reading material while flying to Berlin was a book on shooting better landscapes. Hopefully I will get a chance to shoot a few more soon. Maybe the Amish countryside could be cool?

In Bloom

Its items like this that make me excited to go rummaging in a charity shop! I found this amazing authentic vintage jumpsuit which I think is probably from the 70's era for £3.00. It such a great print and is so nice and easy to wear - will be great for hot days over the summer!
I wanted to ask everyone's advice on whether you think I should leave it as a long leg or whether i should cut it into shorts? I'm tempted to cut it...but not 100% sure!

Man Fragrance Review: John Varvatos's Artisan Black

John Varvatos launched a limited-edition flanker to their 2009 twist on an 18th century eau de cologne complete with a rattan casing called Artisan, a bestseller of the brand. The new iteration is titled Artisan Black and is meant to be a more intense version of the original scent by accentuating the woody and musky tonalities and being more long lasting according to the press release. (Yet to test and confirmed!!:P ). According to other review, Artisan is light and bright, juicy and breezy whereas Artisan Black has more depth, feels a bit more “masculine” and has better sillage and lasting power.

Artisan Black was created by perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux and lists notes of Meyer lemon, tangerine, blood orange, calypsone (a watery melon note), Murraya flower (orange jessamine), neroli/orange blossom, jasmine, Nigerian ginger, purple ginger, cardamom, coriander, Kephalis, Belambre, Boisiris (woody iris note), Serenolide (white musk), vetiver, patchouli, Mexican cueramo (wood), soft leather and Florentine orris absolute.

John Varvatos Artisan Black is a limited edition fragrance; 125 ml Eau de Toilette for $78 from Amazon.

Blogger-up: The Recessionista joins forces with RetailMeNot to attend BlogHer

What becomes The Recessionista most? Well it's not a Blackglama Mink coat, it's a ticket to the Blogher conference! Since I am addicted to blogging, and not paying retail, it's only fitting that I am joining forces with the fabuless coupon code site Retailmenot.com to attend Blogher 2010.  I am chuffed to tell you all that I was chosen as one of 10 bloggers to be a Retail Me Not BlogHer delegate!  This means that RetailMeNot is paying my conference fee to BlogHer.

Did you know that women are the biggest users of social media and they are the most dedicated Bloggers? Because of this, the women’s blogging conference called BlogHer was born. For those seeking great deals on fashion, social media is even more important. Frequently stores with the best prices don't pay money to advertise. The cost of advertising would not allow them to keep their  prices low.  Social Media and Word of Mouth become an important way to get the news of super savings out.

This year's conference is being held in New York in August.   The conference offers great sessions, and a wealth of information to help us expand our networks and become better bloggers. We all know that New York is a pricey city. I'll still be covering hotel and meals, and scrapping frequent flyer miles together for a ticket, but help with obtaining a conference pass free of charge is amazing.  Remember bargain shoppers, always look for a coupon code from RetailMeNot before you hit the buy button.  RetailMeNot features coupon codes from over 50,000 merchants.    There are coupons for groceries, fashion, electronics and more.  I have also featured the site under my The Recessionista's Top Picks column on the right.  It's good stuff, and it's free.

Ten Fabuless Bloggers have been sponsored by RetailMeNot. This is like a Femme Force 10 from Navarone . We are going to band together to take BlogHer by storm.  These ladies have great blogs that are savvy and full of savings.  Check them out:

I've been reading their blogs this week, and all have great tips for savings.  It's going to madness when we all meet at BlogHer in New York in August. I feel the savings coming on! :)  Leave a comment if you are going to BlogHer. Forget the Tweet-up let's have a Meet-up!

On the Street....Claude, Berlin

I'm in Berlin right now shooting an ad campaign. Yesterday I met Claude, her name is Claudia but she hates that name. As you can see, Claude is a beautiful example of a young lady that knows how to play up her best assets. We cast her because she has the figure of a real, everyday girl: she stands about 5'1" and she is very curvy. You can't really appreciate her curves because of her coat, but they're there. It has actually been a little difficult to find samples that fit her correctly but really, who could get past her hair, lips and those legs? She knows that these are her best featues and works with us to find looks that suit her best.

To me, this is such a great reminder to stop obsessing about my own personal imperfections and start highlighting the little gifts.

Tomorrow I'm cutting the sleeves off all of my Guy Rover shirts and showing off the guns! (For those of you who didn't understand the Pocari Sweat post, that was a joke.)

Plan to change the world

Did you know that changing the wolrd can start  with just one child?
That's right.  Just one child.  In the poorest regions of the worlds, 25,000 under 5 die
simply because they lack basic things that we take for granted such as:
clean water, sanitation, medicine and food.
When you sponsor a child for $35 a month you can help an entire community
of children leave poverty behind. You can then invest in programs that will helplocal
people build small businesses, dig wells, empower girls, train teachers, build schools,
run health clinics and much more.

Thanks to Plan it is changing but we need your help.  Let me tell you about Plan.
Founded in 1937 as Foster Parents Plan, they are one of the world’s oldest and largest international development agencies, working in partnership with millions of people around the world to end global poverty. Not for profit, independent and inclusive of all faiths and cultures, they have only one agenda: to improve the lives of children.
Through programs in 66 countries, they give children, families and communities the tools they need to break the cycle of poverty and build sustainable solutions with measurable results for improving their own lives.
Each year, their work impacts the lives of more than 3.5 million families and their children in over 25,000 communities. Join them and plan to change the world.

Plan's work is linked to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which spells out the human rights of all children, including the right to:
  • survive
  • develop to the fullest
  • be protected from harmful influences, abuse and exploitation
  • participate fully in family, cultural and social life.
Listening to what children have to say about their rights, needs and concerns is key to this approach. We encourage and help children to take an active role in finding solutions to their problems and realizing their full potential.

Here are the many things you can do to help Plan:
Donate, sponsor a child, Give a gift of hope, help rebuild Haiti, and there is so much more you can do to help out, just visit the site.

Thanks for helping Plan in your future,
Nathalie
